Kahu Gray as Viscount Nicolas Cascada

Kahu Gray is an Australian-born Māori classical bass baritone, multi-instrumentalist and conductor living in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Kahu is currently undertaking his first year of study at the University of Canterbury, majoring in Music Performance (Voice). He regularly sings solo repertoire at university concerts, and is also an experienced choral singer, having sung with many choirs, Christchurch City Choir, CYC, and CSO Chorus. Kahu was also a member of the NZ Opera chorus during 2025, singing in La Boheme and Monster in The Maze.

Kahu is also a keen instrumentalist, having completed a jazz course on saxophone and flute, and also recently picking up piano lessons again. One of his biggest interests in music is conducting, and he takes weekly conducting lessons to advance his craft and has also been involved with various conducting initiatives and programmes.

Kahu loves all strokes of music, orchestral, choral, jazz, operatic and contemporary music. It is his goal to one day have a career as a bass soloist in opera and concerts, and to maintain his focus on continuing his conducting passions.

Toi Toi Opera has been delighted to feature Kahu singing the role of Patch in their October 2025 production of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea, as a soloist in their November 2025 Masterclass with Jonathan Lemalu, and also their March 2026 Great Hall Lunchtime Concert of Puccini & Pucciniana.
