Despite years of delivering critically acclaimed productions for our beloved home audiences & fair pay for all of the incredibly talented artists involved in mounting them, CNZ has decided not to renew our funding for 2027. All central government funding for opera in Aotearoa from 2027 onwards will be directed to the North Island.
Outside of the wonderful financial & in-kind sponsorship that we have received from the Christchurch City Council, every further penny enabling us to deliver our exciting 2027 programme now has to be fought for via contestable grant funding applications. We didn’t ask CNZ for much, given the relative size of the impact we have in our community each year - just NZ $50,000 - a drop in the ocean, but one which would’ve meant the world to the company & our artists.
Any amount you are able to donate to us today to support our 2027 programme is deeply appreciated by the company & all of the wonderful artists who are its beating heart.
