Matilda Wickbom as Hanna Glavari
After growing up in Wellington, Matilda moved down to Christchurch Ōtautahi to complete a Bachelor of Performing Arts degree, which she graduated from in 2017. Following this she remained in Christchurch and was involved in numerous productions.
She attended the New Zealand Opera School in both 2019 and 2024, and was a member of the NZ Freemasons Opera Chorus from 2018 onwards, performing in Tosca (2018), Trial By Jury (2018), The Barber of Seville (2019), Macbeth as both an ‘Apparition’ and Chorus member (2022), Così fan tutte (2023), La bohème (2025), and the Wellington Season of The Marriage of Figaro (2026).
In 2021 Matilda completed her post-graduate studies in Wellington towards a Graduate Diploma in Music at The New Zealand School of Music - Te Kōkī, where she was privileged enough to receive both the Mona Ross Prize for Excellence in Singing, and the New Zealand School of Music Opera Award for Excellence in Performance.
Some of her recent roles include the First Lay Sister and Lucretia in Toi Toi Opera’s Suor Angelica & Elegies (2021), Dinah in their 2022 production of Bernstein’s Trouble In Tahiti, Goldie B. Locks in their 2024 production of John Davies’ children’s opera Goldie B. Locks & The Three Singing Bears, Nora in their 2025 production of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea, and Mabel in Wellington Comic Opera's production of Pirates. She is also a member of the Wellington Opera chorus, having performed in many of their recent productions.
Matilda is overjoyed to be singing the titular role of Hanna Glavari in Toi Toi Opera’s The Merry Widow.
